Annette Willems
Annette Willems born 1958 Melbourne, Australia.
My roots lie in the land of my birth, Australia. From a young age I preferred to draw than read at school. I loved the idea of recording the world around me, and with only a pencil, I would attemp to render what was in front of me. Years later I would take on other materials and use more of my own expression in my work.
I studied Art and Design at the Swinburne Institute of Technology and graduated in 1982. In June of the same year I found myself travelling to visit my family in the Netherlands, which is where I made my second home. This is where I am today, working teaching and painting using a range of mediums preferring the surprise and unpredictability of watercolour.....just pigment, implement and the most important element - water.
Each time I face a blank piece of paper its the same nervous energy, a drive to create, the play between control and free expression.... the unknown.
My focus is on the emerging image, in the process, it sometimes seems that despite intention and skill, it is as if the artwork creates itself.
